Juniors and seniors have the opportunity to explore career interests, learn job skills and relate learning to actual work experiences while training at a local business. This opportunity to have hands-on experience in different career fields will increase students’ marketability as they practice the skills expected by employers. Students can earn credit for paid, unpaid and supervised, work-based learning experiences. To receive a full credit, 150 hours of course-related work are required, including the portfolio work.
Learning Goals
These learning goals are created for each student by course teachers. These goals should be based on what the student will need to know, understand, and/or be able to do after the Work-based learning experience. The learning objectives should be developed jointly by the teacher of record, the parent, the student, and the employer or supervisor. Ultimate responsibility for the goals rests on the teacher. These goals and objectives will need to be placed in the Addition Goals and Objectives section of the Written Student Learning Plan (WSLP).
The teacher should create learning objectives that reflect the following characteristics:
- Include the major concepts to be learned and the knowledge, skills, and abilities to be acquired on the job and in the classroom. These skills should be aligned to the appropriate industry and/or skills standards.
- Be individualized based on each student’s educational and career goals.
- Be specific, achievable, and measurable.
- For a special education student, be directly related to the goals and objectives of the Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
