Formerly known as Introduction to Computers, Introduction to Computer Technology courses introduce students to computers, including peripheral and mobile devices; the functions and uses of computer technology; the language used in the industry; possible applications of various computer-based technologies; and occupations related to computer technology hardware and software industries. These courses typically explore legal and ethical issues associated with computer technology use, as well as how changes influence modern society. Students may also be required to perform some computer technology operations.
Learning Goals
Students will:
- Learn essential aspects of computer hardware, software, folder structure, file naming, and computer maintenance.
- Develop skills in Office applications, keyboarding, communication tools etc.
- Study copyright laws, ethical decision-making, personal and interpersonal skills, project management skills, and the impact of emerging technologies.
- Develop basic skills in Excel including: entering data, creating formulas, using different functions, adding charts and tables, databases, and mail merge.
- Explore aspects of web terminology, GUI preferences, URLs, and downloading files.
- Develop basic skills in web page development, HTML, storyboarding, WYSIWYG software and using media/images on web pages.
- Create PowerPoint presentations using different slide layouts, themes, images and videos; applying color theory, transitions, and animations.
- Explore personal strengths and weaknesses, career opportunities, develop career plans and life goals, and job-seeking skills.
