Art Appreciation courses introduce students to the historical study of and foundation for many forms of art. These courses help students form an aesthetic framework to examine social, political, and historical events in the world and how visual images express the ideas of individuals and society.
Learning Goals
Students will:
- Examine the social, political, religious, and culture influences found in art.
- Explore the history of art around the work and learn common forms of visual art.
- Learn the basics elements and principles of art.
- Learn to identify pieces of art that illustrate superior skills.
- Explore various prehistoric art pieces and the insights that are revealed about the people that created them.
- Explore art from three of the ancient cultures from the Mediterranean and Near East, including the Sumerians, Ancient Egypt, and Ancient Greece.
- Explore Western artwork of the Renaissance.
- Explore the art of North and South American indigenous peoples.
- Explore four of the main post –Renaissance art periods and styles, including Baroque, rococo, neoclassical and Romantic art.
- Explore the beginnings of modern art styles and periods such as Realism, Impressionism, and Post-impressionism.
- Explore African art and architecture.
- Examine art created in Polynesia, Micronesia, Melanesia, and Australia.

Art in World Cultures
Who is the greatest artist of all time? Is it Leonardo DaVinci? Claude Monet? Michelangelo? Pablo Picasso? Is the greatest artist of all time someone whose name has been lost to history? You will learn about some of the greatest artists while also creating art of your own, including digital art. We will explore the basic principles and elements of art, learn how to critique art, and examine some of the traditional art of the Americas, Africa, and Oceania in addition to the development of Western art.
