Similar in nature to music history/appreciation courses, music appreciation courses focus specifically on students’ appreciation of music. It is designed to help students explore the world of music and to develop an understanding of the importance of music in their lives.
Learning Goals
- Students will be able to distinguish between the act of hearing versus attentively listening to music.
- Students will learn how to critically listen to music.
- Students will be able to respond emotionally and rationally to a wide spectrum of music representative of different genres, periods, styles and cultures.
- Students will be able to identify and construe fundamental components, organizational principles and aesthetic criteria of a musical piece.
- Students will be able to objectively value music and interpret its artistic virtue according to its constituents and placement in historical and cultural context.
- Students will be able to recognize music, composers, interpreters and style as important components of their time and culture and identify their impact in society.
- Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of musical works by associating major compositions to their composers and to their stylistic period.

Music Appreciation
Music is part of everyday lives and reflects the spirit of our human condition. To know and understand music, we distinguish and identify cultures on local and global levels. This course will provide students with an aesthetic and historical perspective of music, covering a variety of styles and developments from the Middle Ages through the Twentieth First Century. Students will acquire basic knowledge and listening skills, making future music experiences more informed and satisfying.
