U.S. Ethnic Studies courses examine the history, politics, economics, society, and/or culture of one or more of the racial/ethnic groups in the United States. These courses may focus primarily on the history of an individual racial/ethnic group or may take a more comprehensive approach to studying the contemporary issues affecting racial/ethnic groups overall.
Learning Goals
Students will:
- Explore the historical and cultural influence that Africa had over the world.
- Learn how the slave trade tore apart African societies and family histories.
- Analyze the effects of the slave trade in the forming of the United States.
- Compare and contrast the establishment and expansion in the South with the simultaneous expansion of free black communities and the abolitionist movement in the North.
- Understand how the Civil War came to be, and the role African Americans played in that important chapter in our nation’s history.
- Explore post-Civil War racial divides and economic challenges.
- Explore the persecution, poverty, injustice and violence African Americans experienced during the Reconstruction and Jim Crow Eras.
- Analyze the triumphs and tragedies for African Americans during The Great Depression and World War II as the foundation for the subsequent Civil Rights movement.
- Learn about the civil rights movement and desegregation.

African American History
How have African Americans shaped the culture of the United States throughout history? Tracing the accomplishments and obstacles of African Americans from the slave trade through emancipation, and to the modern African diaspora, you will learn about the political, economic, social, religious, and cultural factors that have influenced African American life. In African American History, you’ll come face to face with individuals who changed the course of history and learn more about slavery, racism, and the Civil Rights Movement. You will also explore how the history of African Americans influences current events today.
