Description
Criminal Justice courses train students to understand and apply the principles and procedures essential to the overall U.S. criminal justice system. Course topics vary and may include, but are not limited to, structure, history and philosophy of the federal, state, county, and municipal court systems; judicial appointment processes; arrest-to-sentencing sequences; laboratory, forensic, and trial procedure; probation and parole; state and federal correctional facilities; and system interrelationships with law enforcement agencies.
Learning Goals
Students will:
- Identify history and goals of the criminal justice system, juvenile justice system, and corrections system
- Discuss political, moral, and economic concerns and how they lead to the development of laws
- Describe the parts and function of the criminal justice system
- Identify and describe careers opportunities in the criminal justice system including prerequisites and salaries
- Describe the actors in the courtroom and the pretrial, trial, and post-trial processes.
Students will:
- Compare and contrast public security agents to private security workers
- Recall the history of private security in both ancient and modern societies
- Identify career opportunities available in private security and their responsibilities
- Characterize special investigative units such as the Secret Service and its role in security
- Review the roles and responsibilities of SWAT, PIs, USBP and DHS, as well as US DEA
- Review roles and responsibilities of EMS, Firefighters, and other first responders
- Explain the role, responsibilities, and general regulation of INTERPOL
- Describe and determine law enforcement interview techniques and effective communication
- Evaluate Ethics withing the Criminal Justice System and analyze how constitutional law impacts LEOS behaviors and actions
- Demonstrate use of 10 codes and phonetic alphabet
- Identify further training and employment opportunities as well as conduct a search thereof
