Medical Terminology (Grade 9-12)

Students will:

1. Describe the components making up a medical term and the process for defining a word using those components 
2. Explain uses for prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms 
3. Recognize commonly used prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms 
4. Identify common medical abbreviations as well as those on the Do Not Use List 
5. Describe the origin of an eponym and give examples of common eponyms 
6. Describe the building blocks of the body and how they are organized, from cell to system 
7. Define anatomic position and terms related to a change in that position 
8. Explain terms related to body movement and communicate body planes as related to anatomic position 
9. Explain the division of the body into cavities 
10. Describe the regions and quadrants of the abdomen and identify organs found in the different cavities, regions, and quadrants 
11. Define medical terms related to body movement 
12. Explain movements using medical terminology 
13. Describe types of joints found in the body 
14. Identify commonly used abbreviations related to movement 
15. Understand occupations related to body movements 
16. Identify and describe the functions of the organs in the respiratory system 
17. Recognize prefixes, suffixes, and combining forms related to the respiratory system 
18. Describe diseases and conditions of the respiratory system 
19. Explain common treatments and tests used when evaluating conditions of the respiratory system
